Track 7 - Innovative Strategies to Inspire Activism

Workshop 1: Asian, American, & Angry (It's Okay To Be All Three)
Facilitator: Phil Yu, "Angry Asian Man"

You've seen the website - now meet the voice behind it. Phil Yu wanted a place on the web to write down a few thoughts. So he started a blog. What he got was a following. AngryAsianMan.com has somehow become a leading destination on the world wide web for news and views of what's going on in Asian America. One man, one website, and a healthy dose of anger. Join this discussion-based workshop as Phil shares his perspective and answers questions on creating the site, being angry, and promoting future web-based activism.

Workshop 2: Pursuing a Career in Activism: Have You Considered Social Work?
Facilitators: Clifford Yee and Cathryn Fabian, Graduate students at the University of Michigan School of Social Work

Are you planning on going to graduate school? Have you ever wondered how you could promote social justice as a career? Are you unsure of what field to go into? The purpose of this workshop is to introduce social work as one potential way of continuing your dedication to serving the Asian American community past your undergraduate years. Students from the University of Michigan's Coalition of Asian Pacific American Social Work Students (CASWS) will introduce social work as a broad, diverse profession which is committed to bringing about social change by actively working against oppression in our society. We will challenge many of the negative stereotypes about social work by discussing the many career opportunities available working with individuals, organizations, communities, and social institutions. We will also talk about our own personal experiences and observations as Asian American social work students.

Workshop 3: Start the "IDEAAL" Program at Your School!
Facilitators: Cheng Ruan, Kim Tran, Amy Yang

Organization: Texas A&M University, Institute for the Development and Education of Asian American Leaders (IDEAAL)

IDEAAL is a leadership program at Texas A&M University designed to teach freshman students about issues of APA leadership, values, identity, interaction with the community, and utilizing campus resources early in their college career. Freshman participants attend a series of workshops discussing topics such as the Model Minority Myth, APA History, and Asian vs. American leadership styles. In addition, upperclassmen are recruited to be mentors to provide the freshman with additional support and perspective on leadership, culture, and community. The workshop will discuss all facets of the program including creation, implementation, and assessment and will provide a framework for developing similar programs at other schools.

Workshop 4: Our Shot at Activism: Creating and Publishing "Asian American X"
Facilitators:
Arar Han, Harvard Business School Casewriter, Boston College 2003
John Hsu, Management Consultant, Harvard College 2003
(editors of "Asian American X")

Join the editors of "Asian American X," a collection of Asian American identity essays published by the University of Michigan Press, as they discuss the book's creation from origin to outcome. Having just been published in August 2004, "Asian American X" has already been adopted for use in college classes across the country, and is an example of unconventional actions that college-aged students can take to influence the shaping of the APA community. In this workshop, Arar Han and John Hsu will share why and how they embarked on this effort, what they learned from editing the essays, and how they hope to use book as a tool for activism.

Workshop 5: Activism and Art: How Does It All Fit Together?
Facilitator: Katie Li, College of the Holy Cross student

As activists, coming up with innovative publicizing and educational methods is challenging; we're constantly tempted to use the same old posters and flyers. We'll show you that there are other creative ways to engage students and communities to your cause. Based on past workshops and projects of Tony Osumi, a longtime activist, teacher and artist in the APIA community, this workshop will provide hands on activities and projects that bridge the world of art and activism.
